FROM THE ONTARIO CLEAN AIR ALLIANCE: Once again, the federal government is planning to waste taxpayers dollars on a new nuclear technology which is far more hype than substance with no working prototypes in Canada.
Nuclear is too slow to deploy to help us meet our climate targets, and it will leave us with a legacy of toxic radioactive waste. At 2 to 5 times more costly than wind and solar energy, it makes no economic sense. Money spent on a phantom nuclear technology that can't compete on cost with readily available solar and wind power represents critical climate dollars wasted. Tell Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to invest in wind and solar energy, not new nuclear reactors. A copy of your message will be sent to your M.P. |
No plan that gets us to net zero in a reasonable time frame includes new nuclear reactors. Nuclear is far too slow and expensive to deal with the climate emergency. Sign the Sierra Club Petition HERE

OCTOBER 2020 - TELL THE PRIME MINISTER TO KEEP SMRS OUT OF THE MANDATE LETTERS
Many of us wrote to the Prime Minister and MPs just a few weeks ago, urging them to keep small modular reactors (SMRs) out of the throne speech. And we were partially successful – the Throne Speech included only veiled references to SMRs. There were no overt commitments and the word ‘nuclear’ was omitted in favour of “next-generation clean energy.” . But then last week, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry announced a $20 million subsidy for SMR wannabe developer Terrestrial Energy. This could be the first of many.
The next day, Maclean’s Magazine published an interview with the federal minister of Environment and Climate Change in which he sounded not so keen, saying any new nukes would have to compete economically with wind, solar, geothermal and more. This signals that there are divergent views in Cabinet and we may still influence this Government’s direction.
As each new session of Parliament gets under way, the Prime Minister of Canada issues a mandate letter to each member of Cabinet, setting out the policy objectives that each minister is expected to work to accomplish. Following the September 23rd Speech from the Throne, we expect the mandate letters for this next session of Parliament are under development now and will be released shortly.
SEPTEMBER 2020 - KEEP SMRS OUT OF THE THRONE SPEECH
Reach out to the Prime Minister today, urging him to specifically exclude subsidies and promotion of so-called “small modular reactors” in the mandate letters. Instead, Ministers should be directed to focus on real action on climate change, with goals and targets that can be achieved in the next ten years (SMRs can’t do that!).
Contact the Prime Minister, with the message in the box below. Copy and paste this message or write your own. But please do it today! And please share this action alert within your group or network.

TAKE ACTION
The Throne Speech should not be science fiction: Keep Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMRs) out!
In his September 19th CBC interview, Minister of Natural Reources Seamus O'Regan broadly hinted that small modular reactors might show up in the Throne Speech on September 23rd. A self-acknowledged fan of science fiction, Minister O'Regan should not be allowed to wield his light sabre powers over the Government of Canada's COVID-recovery plan by diverting taxpayers dollars into private sector nuclear pipe dreams. WRITE TO CABINET TODAY! |
New nuclear is NOT part of the path to net zero. | Sierra Club Canada
No plan that gets us to net zero in a reasonable time frame includes new nuclear reactors. Nuclear is far too slow and expensive to deal with the climate emergency. Just like fossil fuel energy, nuclear produces wastes that pose unacceptable health hazards and economic costs. Radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants have been piling up for over 70 years.
